Alone in the waiting room of John Smith (seriously, I cannot get over his name, what was his mother thinking?) I have a chance to reflect on the last twenty-four hours. In one hour, Delilah and I will be out of here. To be honest, I wasn't all the way comfortable leaving her. Letting her out of my sight went against every instinct I have. But, I finally decided to come alone. We're going to be together for the rest of forever. One final hour without her in my head will give me a chance to come to terms with it all.

She promised she wouldn't leave the apartment. She promised I wouldn't have to start counting days again. The thought makes me smile.

There was no day sixty-seven.

I relax. Letting my shoulders fall, and my eyes close. Taking a deep breath, I clear my thoughts. There's no onion smell today. That's nice.

“Sam?” I hear.

Opening my eyes, I see the generically named counselor in the half open door. He smiles at me.

Today, I get to smile back.

We head back to his office. I plop down in the same chair, he takes the same seat behind the desk. “Well, Sam. You're looking better.”

“I'm doing great, actually.”

“What's changed?” he asks.

“Delilah's back. Showed up at my apartment last night.”

He scribbles on the notepad. “I see.” More scribbling.

“She explained everything,” I go on. He seems suspicious.

“She did?”

I nod, suddenly aware that I can't tell him the truth about where she was and why. I need a lie. And, fast. “Yeah,” I say. “Work had her traveling, and she didn't have my new contact info. Since I moved and everything. So, she couldn't let me know. She feels really bad. We talked it out, though.”

John waits for a moment before asking, “And this is what you want?”

“Well, yeah. It's what I've wanted since the moment she left. I just want to be with her.”

“Can you tell me why?”

What? I'm not sure I know how to answer that. “I love her.” That's all I can think to say.

“Fair enough. So, what are you going to do next?”

I shrug. Needing another lie. “Just live together, I guess. Build a life. Probably turn into the kind of cliché happy couple I used to make fun of.”

“How are you feeling about all of this?” he's writing away on the notepad again.

“Good.”

He smiles at me. “Could you be a little more specific? Tell me the emotions you're feeling.”

“Excited. Hopeful. Happy. A little nervous it's all too good to be true.”

“Well, very often when we feel something is too good to be true that's because it is.”

“What do you mean?” I thought he was on my team!

“I only mean your instincts are good. You may want to listen to that gut feeling.”

Now, I'm confused. Which is infuriating because I came here for clarity. “I don't think it's a gut feeling, necessarily. More like a tiny worry.”

More scribbling. I wish he wouldn't do that. “That's good,” he says. “So, what do you need from me?”

“I'd like to continue seeing you, if that's alright.
